among early neonatal deaths in the United Oxford Hospitals was noticed. When compared to an earlier survey in the same hospitals no change in the distribution by birthweight score of the affected infants was seen. The increased incidence of the syndrome coincided with a fall in the perinatal mortality rate. An analysis of the clinical features and pathological findings in the affected infants showed that certain known causes of the syndrome, like antepartum haemorrhage and hypothermia,

Massive pulmonary haemorrhage in the newborn infant.
Six cases of massive pulmonary haemorrhage in newborn infants are described. 2 term infants suffered severe birth asphyxia and massive pulmonary haemorrhage presented early (mean 5 hours); in 4 preterm infants massive pulmonary haemorrhage presented late (mean 4 days) while receiving assisted ventilation. All the infants were treated with positive pressure ventilation, vigorous correction of pH...
متن کاملCoagulation studies in massive pulmonary haemorrhage of the newborn.
Coagulation studies were performed on two newborn infants with fatal massive pulmonary haemorrhage. The first showed a reduced level of plasma fibrinogen with defective thrombin-fibrinogen reaction, corrected by protamine, and defective thromboplastin generation. In the second case, a premature infant, the fibrinogen level was normal but there was a severe defect in thromboplastin generation wi...

Massive pulmonary haemorrhage in the newborn is a well-recognized but little understood condition, characterized by the presence in the alveoli and alveolar ducts, and sometimes in the interstitial spaces, of large numbers of erythrocytes. The distribution of haemorrhage may be patchy or confluent causing consolidation, as distinct from the petechial haemorrhages seen in infants dying after pre...
